For the better part of 15years , I had a hip that for progressively worse. Year by year I lost flexibility to the point where I can remember when I lost the ability to put on a sock using two hands. The common advice was to wait as long as you could before getting a THR, wait till you were older.

But then I came across an article in the minniapolis newspaper about a women who had had hip resurfacing. Sounded interesting but there was still the problem of cost. Like many americans I am uninsured. Then one day my sister mentioned an article, her husband had read in Time Magazine,. The article was about Americans who travelled to India for medical care. Now that was very interesting indeed. But still it wasn’t until the fall of 2006 , when I finally decided to make the move. I had finally reached the point where the pain had become an issue.

I decided on India and through an internet forum for people with hip problems came upon several highly regarded doctors. I chose Dr. Bala based on the strong and confident recommendations of several people who Dr. Bala had operated on , I also choose him because of his obvious down to earth personality. He responded quickly to my e-mails and he was extremely accommodating, I decided to have it done in January to take advantage of the wonderful Indian weather, no snow and the temperature in the upper 80degree’s.

Dr. Bala arranged my flights from Delhi To Mumbai to Coimbatore where I was met at the airport by one of his assistants and driven to the hotel. The next day by Dr.Bala came to the hotel to make sure, I was well and to answer any question.

Dr. Bala is a very confident surgeon and yet I can’t over emphasize his down to earth personality, his ready laugh, his ability to make the patient relax and believe in hip resurfacing. When my western palete had problems with Indian food , he along with the nurses, bent over backwards to find food and juice. I cant say enough about the care , I received in the hospital. I was always being asked if I needed anything.

When I was discharged from the hospital Dr. Bala found a dentist for me , so I could have some much needed work done. When I went away for a week, he agreed to take care of some clothes and things which I did not need and which were making my backpack unnecessarily heavy. When I returned to coimbatore Dr. Bala found a less expensive hotel for me.

In short Dr.Bala has in my opinion gone beyond the usual call of duty to help me and make sure, I was comfortable and if I needed anything all I had to do was to ask.

Finally I want to say how happy , I was with the hospital , Sri Ramakrishna , the care and attention I was given was second to none and I want to say how much I enjoyed India and the people. Of all the countries I have traveled to Indians are by for the friendliest and warm hearted people. I have ever met. To Dr. Bala a sincere thank you to all that you have done for me. You made my time in India a time, I will never ever forget. Anyone thinking of going to India for hip resurfacing don’t hesitate for a moment.
